A Brief History on Van Mildert

William Van Mildert

William Van Mildert (1765-1836) was the last Prince Bishop of Durham from 1826 to 1836, and one of the founders of the University of Durham. His name survives in Van Mildert College, founded in 1965 and the Van Mildert Professor of Divinity.

Life

He was educated at Merchant Taylors School (formerly of London) and was Bishop of Llandaff from 1819 to 1826, when he transferred to Durham. Prior to this, he had been rector of the church of St. Mary-le-Bow in London as well as Dean of St Paul's between 1820 and 1826.
As part of the University's foundation, behind which he was the driving force, he moved his residence from Durham Castle to Lumley Castle. He gifted the castle to the University, where it became the home of University College. In addition, he gifted a large number of buildings on Palace Green, between the Castle and the Cathedral. These are currently in use by various departments of the University (principally law, music and a small portion of the University Library).

Van Mildert the store

Van Mildert the store was founded in 1995 by 3 friends with a passion for clothing, the name was selected as the founders felt that William Van Mildert played a large role in the development of Durham, with founding the University, and much of today's success in Durham can be traced back to the foundations William Van Mildert lay back in 1765 to 1836.
The store went onto win award after award, from Best new store, Designer retailer of the year, best marketing campaign, but the one Van Mildert are most proud of is Customer Service, and this is still something that Van Mildert in Sunderland base there business around.
The store is ran by Chris Hayes, the only original founder of Van Mildert remaining.
